What is a saint in the Catholic Church? Saints are deceased people declared by the pope to be a saint, who are now in heaven, and worthy of veneration by all faithful. What led the pope to canonize each saint? Heard about the Congregation for the Causes of Saints in Rome? That is the group that conducts the formal examination of each potential saint's life, their writings, their reputation of holiness and the level of their faith. Feel you have the patience of a saint and might qualify when your earthly ticket is up? Think again ... in order to make the list of Cathoic saints you will also need to have two miracles attributed to your intercession which can be authenticated by the Church. It is not just enough to be good, you must also have supernatural influence from your heavenly residence. However, as all things, there is one way around the requirement: just die as a martyr for your faith in Jesus Christ, and your sainthood is in the bag. You know St. stands for saint, but do you know what Bl. stands for? Bl. is the abbreviation for Blessed. The Blessed are deceased persons beatified by the pope, which means the pope has declared the person as living a heroic holy life worthy of veneration by the public on a limited basis, not a universal basis as a saint. Generally, after beatification follows the process of rigorous examination by the Congregation for the Causes of Saints in Rome. Thus, as an example, Bl. John Duckett, a martyr, was beatified in 1929, and so has the title of Blessed, but he is not a saint. This means Blessed John Duckett can be venerated only in limited places and liturgical exercises. However, it is unlawful to pay reverence to Bl. John Duckett outside of the places granted permission, or recite an office in his honor, or celebrate Mass with prayers referring to Bl. John Duckett; on the other hand, it is lawful to do so for St. John the Baptist, St. John Bosco and St. John the Apostle, all whom have been canonized saints. |
In the case where several saints have the same first name, we only list the first
name once, and do not give all the variations of that name. For example
there are several St. Elizabeths, such as St Elizabeth Ann Seton, a St Elizabeth
of Portugal, a St. Elizabeth of Hungary, etc., however, we only list St. Elizabeth
once. In addition, the saint names in our index are restricted to only first names. This is why there are some saint names you may know that are missing from where you expect to seem them within our lists, such as Saint Xavier, who is actually Saint Francis Xavier. If you are seeking more information on saints than just first names, visit this Catholic saints directory here. |
Due to many emails we receive for the same information, we have placed links to lots
